"The morning after the first patch job, I discovered a pile of red threads lying on the ground below the web. At first I assumed the wind had blown them out; on closer inspection it became clear that the spider had repaired the web to perfect condition using its own methods, throwing the threads out in the process. My repairs were always rejected by the spider and discarded, usually during the course of the night, even in webs which looked abandoned. The larger, more complicated patches where the threads were held together with glue often retained their form after being thrown out, although in a somewhat "wilted" condition without the rest of the web to suspend and stretch them."

such an interesting idea and how intricate the work must be! even more, i love the title of her outdoor portfolio - "uninvited collaborations with nature". it brings up a part of the project that you don't really think about - the spider, or the tadpole, or whatever part of nature she uses, has no say whether or not they want to participate. so at first all i saw was the beauty in the photo above, but now all i see is the wrecked home of a spider.

happy birthday week!

i recently introduced sean to the concept of "birthday week" vs. birthday day. basically, the first few days of the week you constantly remind your friend that it will be his or her birthday later that week. you can do this by saying "happy birthday week!" every time he or she answers the phone, or by screaming "happy birthday week!"as you pop out from behind the refrigerator just as the birthday boy or girl comes back in the house after walking their weimaraner. (based on my experience, i wouldn't suggest that second idea.) then you start celebrating on the day of thier birth (in sean's case, a thursday) and keep celebrating that day of birth until the week is through. see below.

on thursday i woke sean up with a suprise. get your mind right! it was a card and t-shirt. then marisa and i suprised him for lunch. we took him and his co-worker samantha to paco's in jacksonville beach. that night me, sean, and sean tucker went to the jax food fight thanks to event sponsors and awesome friends the chris(es) from station four! it was alot of fun, alot of food, alot of drinks and alot of people. including a man wearing a colander as a hat. when we got home i gave sean the rest of his presents. get your mind right! it was another t-shirt, a "wreck this journal" book and a framed john vanderslice gig poster by jeff matz.

friday we both had to work, but friday night i took my boy out for a nice dinner at 1171, a new fine dining restaurant in murray hill. we split the seared scallop appetizer and started with a blueberry martini for me and a mojito-style margarita for sean. next up a glass of conundrum and the shrimp and scallop linguini for me, and a gin and tonic and the duck entree for sean. ooh and the dessert! it was a homemade chocolate mousse cake with white chocolate shavings on top and a cookie crust. melts in your mouth! after dinner we headed up to first friday's in five points to meet up with "the hippies" at raglands. then moved over to kickback's for some photo hunt action. the team: me, sean, joey and tiffany. the score: #1 champion!

saturday we woke up slowly, had some cereal, and bummed around the house. then we hit up anomaly for baby clothes and got lunch at hovan. from there sean went on to "boys night" and i went on to beth sweet's baby shower! it was so good to see beth & tina - both pregnant and ready to pop - our hosts melanie & john, and the entire sweet family! after the shower, we met back up with sean and the boys, called a few friends, and all went bowling!

sunday we watched a story on alanis morrisette on cbs sunday morning (ironic i'm telling you!), took showers, and got lunch at firehouse subs. that's when the magic started :) i had tiffany meet us at firehouse. sean doesn't really think anything of it. (this might have been due to the awkward "customer service" we got, or more tiffany got. you'll have to ask her.) but then when we go to leave, tiffany gets in the car with us. now sean knows something is up, but what? we start driving down 95 for about 45 min until i turn off at the st. augustine exit. i had a whole surprise day planned! we started at the conch house for reggae sundays. russel, katie, sean, eric, chris l, and ashley all surprised sean there. then we moved to the sunset grille where karen, katie and greg joined the surprise. and next up . . . the vampire weekend concert at cafe 11! the show has been sold out for months, but i managed to buy 10 tickets the day they went on sale and i'm so glad i did. the show was awesome! lots of fun, cheap beer, good friends, got my vinyl signed, ran into emily and adam from anomaly, made memories, you know.

so there you have it. a birthday week done right :) but be careful - birthday weeks often lead to a loss of money, loss of brain cells, loss of sleep and in some cases a loss of friends after constant mass emails and waaay too many plans :) thanks to everyone who came out!

oooh, and we ran into questlove at drastic plastic record store on sunday before we headed to the airport! i guess they were there to play a show and he just strolled in and started looking around in the used vinyl section. i made varick take a picture with him, but we both got to shake his hand. and he introduced himself as ahmir, which i guess is his real name - ahmir townsend. anyway, it was perfect way to round out our awesome weekend in omaha, ne.

soooo, in omaha this past weekend for the 2008 aiga national leadership retreat, we ended up at a bar called the french underground which had a foosball table. as many of you know, i have a love for the foos. i also have a table in my house, but i never get to play it as i live alone. anyway, in omaha i started playing with torrey from aiga indianapolis and we were killing it! winning 5 - 0. then he stepped out and michael from aiga memphis stepped in and we killed it too! we were winning game after game until the deadly duo: marlon from honolulu and tim from birmingham.

2.17 minutes of foos was uploaded from that night. and where does it start? right before the streak-breaking goal shot from tim that kicked me off the table. figures! haha. either way i had tons of fun and made some great friends that night.

three day weekend!

sean's parents are coming in this weekend for his brother mohrey's soccer tournament in jacksonville - meeting the rents! wish me luck! anyway, we'll be floating around town with them most of the weekend, but here are a few things going on that i hope to check out.

SUNDAY

Community Community Community Festival

When: Sunday May 25, noon till 2am. 14 hours.

Where: The Pearl and the parking lot (so bike or carpool if possible)

What: A benefit show to raise money for The Springfield Community Food Garden located on north end of The Pearl's property, to collect cans and non perishable food item for Ultimate Picnic, a organization that feeds anyone that wants to eat. So come hungry for free food. There will be a bazaar/ tents/ booths set up in the parking lot for games, awareness, and workshops. There will also be tours of the community garden. Twelve bands will be playing inside The Pearl. The Pearl staff will be working serving with various drink specials.

Who: The people throwing the event are Jaxscene, Springfield Community Garden and Ultimate Picnic, with special thanks to The Pearl. The bands are Manatella, Tuffy, Wudun, Fruit Machine, Buffalo Tears, Heavy Flow, Tough Junkie, Lazerstar, Airport Factory, Helios Eye, Sharing Needles With Jesus, and America Del Sur.

Donate: Feeling charitable if you want to donate more to The Springfield Community Garden they need old or unneeded garden tools like rakes or shovels, trash cans, extra wood for building, nails, hammers, seeds and garden plants. Please don't buy anything new, the garden believes in being organic and reusing old unwanted items. I know Ultimate Picnic needs old plates, utensils, and cups. Your unwanted can goods and nonperishable food items. Once again nothing new.

Vangie's BBQ at Hannah Park on Monday

The Vangie we all know and love is moving to the Phillipines on Tuesday for Medical School. Exciting for her, but sad for us :( Her annual thing is to cook out at Hannah Park in Mayport on Memorial Day so this one will be her big send off!

Vangie says: "they'll start cooking around 630 am and it goes on ALL DAY LONG!! They suggest getting there around 9 or later...There will be food... but you can bring side items and dishes if you want! ALSO, if you want some steak, bring your own steak and our chefs will season it for you (trust me, it's delicious!)If you don't bring food, please bring some drinks (beers, alcohol, etc.) so the people who have brought food don't have to pay for alcohol."

these wedding photos captured by photographer Wang Qiang in Myanmar on May 12 as a 7.9-magnitude earthquake destroyed a 100-year old church behind this wedding party in just 10 seconds are heart breaking. government officials say over 50,000 people were killed by this earthquake, and 30,000 more are still reported missing. the 12 people at the wedding shoot were unharmed, and told cnn most of the church collapsed in just 10 seconds. how quickly life can change.

a. how weird is it that out of a bajillion million songs on on demand, sean chose "isn't it ironic?" by alanis morissette at 1 a.m. on a tuesday night?

b. how weird is it that a. i was on my blog at that same moment and 2. i thought it was notable enough to write about it on said blog?

and 3. how freakin weird is it that alanis morissette was on the today show this morning even though she hasn't done anything lately and the first song she performed was . . . ISN'T IT IRONIC!?!?!?!

when i got in my car this a.m. the first song to shuffle on my iPod was "Price of Gas" by Bloc Party which is one of the reasons i'm crazy broke right now, followed by "Clocks" by Coldplay which I'd been staring at all morning since I was running late for work, and then "Talking Birds" by Death Cab which I didn't think had any coincidence to it, BUT! i totally watched a segment about a bird who mimics Obama's Yes We Can commercial on NBC Nightly News last night! boo yah!

six word stories

this morning a woman told me she went to a party where the hostess asked each guest to write a story in just six words and then compiled them all as a gift to her husband. she got the idea from ernest hemingway. he once wrote a story in six words and is said to have called it his best work.

"for sale: baby shoes. never worn."

who knew you could fit so much meaning in so few words? that's why he's ernest hemingway. well, back in 2006, wired magazine challenged current writers, directors, creatives, etc. to do the same. here are a few that stood out.

*Margaret Atwood's social science fiction novel Oryx & Crake is several hundred pages long, but was so captivating that I read it in one sitting, not a common feat for me. ask stef. anyway, if you like that sort of genre, i'd give it a read.

isn't it ironic

it's 1 a.m. on a tuesday, but not just any tuesday. it's my boss kurtis and good friend maegan's birthday tuesday! went to lunch at sneaker's with the office to celebrate the boss man's bday round 1pm, ended up at the boss man's house playing rock band around 4 pm. i was good at bass and not exactly horrible at the drums, but still don't have the hang of that game.

anyway, had dinner with my friend tara at b.b.'s for the first time and liked the idea of it. none of the food we had wowed me, but i could see sean and i sharing a cheese plate and bottle of wine at the bar for dinner some night. he's never been there either, so we'll have to give it a try.

anyway, sean and i are still hunched over our computers at this wee hour - me blogging about nothing and loving it, him working on his good friend eric's website. going to bed soon, but sean just played "ironic" by alanis morrisette on demand and i was instantly back in my bedroom in 1996. i remember loving this video then, and just fell back in love with it now.
